Most people measure a night route on an empty floor in daylight. That gives you a house nobody lives in. At 3am the house has a hamper beside the bathroom door, a basket of folded towels in the hall, and a bag somebody set down by the bed. Those objects decide whether she gets through, so size the route with them in place.

Walk the six stops with the house as it is

Pick a normal night. Ask whoever is in the house to leave everything where it usually sits, then walk the trip from bed to toilet with a helper a step behind. Go slowly. At each of the six stops, stop and note anything she has to step around, reach past, or lean on. Do not tidy first. The tidy version is the one you are trying to avoid.

Measure the narrow point, not the wide one

The number that matters is the clear width at the tightest spot she passes, not the width of the hall. Measure from the edge of the basket, the hamper, or the open door to the opposite wall or frame. Measure the height of anything she could catch a foot on, and check whether it sits where the door swings when the door opens. Write each figure in the notebook next to its stop number.

Decide what moves and who moves it back

Sort each object into one of three groups. Some can move to a fixed place off the route, such as a hamper that lives in a closet until laundry day. Some have to stay but can be lowered or pushed flat against the wall. Some should simply leave the route for good. For each object in the first two groups, name the person who puts it back when the job is done. A route that depends on a reminder will drift within a few weeks.

What to write down

Keep one page per stop: the object, the measured clearance, whether it moves, who moves it, and the last time someone checked it. Do not put health observations on this page. Those belong in a separate note for the physician. If you are working through the whole route in order, the reading path lays out the steps: Start here: a reading path.
