At 3am, do not straighten the bath mat and call it fixed. Pick it up. Put it somewhere outside the walking route. Do not ask your mother to step on it again to show you how it moved.
If she has already fallen, stop the floor project and use the first ten minutes after a fall. Questions about pain, dizziness, weakness, medication, or whether she should walk again belong with her physician.
Clear all six stops
Walk the route in order: bed edge, first standing place, bedroom crossing, hall turn, bathroom entrance, toilet. Remove the bath mat from whichever stop it reaches. Then look for a second loose item nearby, including a small rug, towel, clothing, wastebasket, or scale.
At the bed edge, check where her feet land. At the first standing place, leave enough clear floor for both feet and the device she uses. Across the bedroom and at the hall turn, move anything that narrows the path. At the bathroom entrance, check both sides of the threshold. At the toilet, clear the place where she turns, backs up, and sits.
Keep the mat out of service for the rest of the night. If the bare bathroom floor is wet, dry it and find where the water came from before she uses that route. If you cannot make the route clear and dry, stay with her and choose a different plan for the night.
What to write down before you go back to bed
Write the time, which of the six stops held the mat, whether the mat folded or slid, whether the floor was wet, what your mother was wearing on her feet, and what she was holding. Write down what you removed and where you put it.
Do not write “bathroom unsafe.” Write what another person can check: “Mat slid toward toilet when touched by foot,” or “Mat edge curled at bathroom entrance.” A short, observable note gives the next person a job.
Use one Saturday to settle the mat question
In daylight, inspect the mat on a clear floor away from your mother’s route. Check the top, every edge, and the entire underside. Look for a curled corner, torn backing, loose fibers, or material that comes off in your hand. Check the bathroom floor for residue, moisture, and an uneven place under the mat.
Then make a decision. Keep the floor clear, replace the mat, or move it to a place that is not part of the night route. Do not return it because the bathroom looks unfinished without it.
If you are considering another floor covering, test the actual route before keeping it. Place it flat. Approach it from the bedroom. Cross the bathroom entrance. Turn toward the toilet. Back up and sit. Include the walker, cane, or other device your mother normally uses. Stop if an edge lifts, the covering shifts, or the device catches.
Give the check to one person
A cleared floor does not stay cleared by itself. Name one person who will check the six stops. Put that name beside the job. The check should include the floor, the route edges, and the place where removed items tend to return.
Choose a trigger that already happens in the house: after cleaning, after laundry, after overnight visitors, or when supplies are restocked. The owner checks the route after that event and removes anything that has drifted back.
Keep the instruction plain: “Walk bed to toilet. Clear all six stops. Leave the bath mat out.” If another person cleans the bathroom, show them where the mat belongs when it is not in use.
Close the loop
On the next ordinary night, walk behind your mother only if she agrees and if her physician has not told her to avoid the walk. Watch the route, not just the bathroom floor. Note where she pauses, reaches, changes direction, or leaves her walking device.
If the mat stays out but the same trouble remains, the mat was not the whole problem. Write down the stop where the walk changes and take that specific observation to her physician.
