Pick a Saturday morning when the house is quiet, and walk the night trip with the animal where it actually sleeps. A dog on the hallway rug or a cat that sits at the bathroom door changes where her feet land at 3am. A route measured with the animal removed will not match the one she walks.

Before you start

Get a tape measure, a notepad, and a pencil. Stand at the bed and note the bed height and whether the pet sleeps beside it, under it, or on the floor at the foot. Then walk the six stops in order: bed edge, bedroom door, hallway, hall corner, bathroom door, toilet. At each stop, write down where the animal usually lies, where its bowls sit, and whether it follows her when she moves.

What to measure

Measure the clear width of the path at its narrowest point, which is usually a doorway or the hall corner. Measure again with the pet bed and bowls where they normally are. Write both numbers. The difference is the space the animal takes from the route.

Check the litter box if it sits in or beside the bathroom. Note how far it sits from the toilet and whether loose litter lies on the floor around it.

Check any baby gate or pet barrier across the route. Look at its step-over height and whether it swings or lifts. A gate she has to climb is a new hazard, not a fix.

What to change, and what to ask

Move the water bowl and food dish out of the route if you can do it without sending the animal hunting for them in the dark. Move the pet bed only if the path stays clear at its narrowest point after the move. If the animal is often in the path at night, place a low light near the floor at its usual spot so it and she can both be seen. Ask the animal's veterinarian whether its sleeping spot can be changed without causing distress, and do not move it on guesswork.

What to write down

Write one line per stop: the clear width, what the animal does there, and what you changed. Keep the page on the fridge with the rest of her route notes.
